The Glass of Old Spain
Consolidated Catalonian Glass is a glassware line produced by the Consolidated Lamp and Glass Company between approximately 1927 and 1942.
Consolidated Glass, located in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania, created various decorative glass items, including lamps, vases, and dinnerware. In January 1927, they introduced the Catalonian line. Designer and sculptor Reuben Haley created the pieces and the manufacturing process. The Catalonian line was one of its most popular due to its distinctive aesthetic, which featured irregular shapes and a textured surface that gave it a hand-made look.
The company capitalized on the craze for Spanish-influenced design emerging from southern California and Florida architects and designers. Potteries like Pacific Pottery and Bauer Pottery further accelerated this trend.
Their glassware was made by pressing molten glass into molds, which gave it an irregular pattern and a variety of textures. The pieces were often colored or treated with a finish that enhanced their rustic, antique appearance. The Catalonian line is now highly collectible and is appreciated for its artistic qualities and innovative design.
Catalonian is found in many different colors and finishes. Transparent colors include Crystal (clear), Emerald Green, Spanish Rose, Red, and Yellow. The “ceramic wash” finishes include Amethyst, Honey Yellow, Jade Green, Reuben Blue, White, Russet, and Pink. You’ll also find two-tone colors, like combinations of clear with yellow or green, and Rainbow with a blue, pink, and green ceramic wash.
The Catalonian line was extensive, featuring a wide variety of dinnerware, glassware, and decorative pieces. A couple of years after introducing the line, Consolidated incorporated a new design now known as “Spanish Knobs.”
Consolidated closed their doors in 1963.
