Memphis-Milano

The Memphis Group, or Memphis Milano, was a 1980s Italian design and architecture collective founded by Ettore Sottsass. The group included many notable members such as Michele De Lucchi, Nathalie, du Pasquier, George Sowden, Peter Shire and others who brought expertise in ceramics, textile, and furniture design. Memphis rebelled against the still popular mid-century modern and minimalism design movements popular during the late 1970s. Sottsass’s goal was to be “radical, funny, and outrageous.” David Bowie and Karl Lagerfield were prominent collectors.

This work focuses on reinterpreting the bold, iconic forms of Memphis Milano furniture designs through 3D modeling software. By digitally reconstructing these groundbreaking pieces, I can honor the radical creativity of the 1980s design movement while exploring new possibilities for their visualization and application. Using vibrant colors, unconventional shapes, and geometric patterns, my reproductions celebrate the playful, boundary-pushing spirit of the Memphis group. This digital process allows me to not only preserve their legacy but also bring their daring aesthetic into new contexts, bridging the gap between past innovation and modern technology.
