The Memphis Group, or Memphis Milano, was a 1980s Italian design and architecture collective founded by Ettore Sottsass. The group included many notable members such as Michele De Lucchi, Nathalie, du Pasquier, George Sowden, Peter Shire and others who brought expertise in ceramics, textile, and furniture design. Memphis rebelled against the still popular mid-century modern and minimalism design movements popular during the late 1970s. Sottsass’s goal was to be “radical, funny, and outrageous.” David Bowie and Karl Lagerfield were prominent collectors.
